Backlit signage requires two basic elements: a light box and a printed graphic.

FLUORESCENT. Graphics are evenly lit by standard fluorescent tubes

LED Intensely bright but energy-efficient. Require adequate diffusion to evenly spread light

EDGE-LIT LED. Popular for retail graphics, these inexpensive light boxes house lights evenly spaced around the frame

If you are looking to take your visual branding to another level, considering printing on backlit film with Alphagraphics Chicago North! At Alphagraphics, our state of the art printing can get the bold colors and professional quality that will get eyes staring at your printed graphics. Let’s get started with some of the printing options we have for our backlit graphics:

Backlit Printing Options

Backlit film is made of a translucent polyester material which allows light to penetrate through one side of the material, illuminating the photograph or artwork on the printed side. You will often see backlit’s in lightboxes at Chicago movie theaters & in shopping malls, for advertising and directories. Backlit’s are printed as single-sided graphics, which can then be fit into lightboxes or backlit frames.

Backlit’s can also be printed as second-surface graphics, meaning the film is adhered to the inside of a glass display. In this particular case, the art would be printed on a transparent material. While the material is removable, this application would serve as a more long term solution. For this method, it is important to apply an opaque laminate to the back of the graphics, that way the colors of the art appear more vibrant. The illumination from the lightbox is still able to penetrate the graphic, even using this particular method.

Backlit’s can also be enhanced by adding a laminate to the printed surface. This increases the durability of the graphic, protecting it from scratches, making in water resistant, and helping it to withstand the effects of UV rays.

Multifunctional Design

Another plus to working with backlit film, is that it is still a functional graphic even if it is not illuminated. With high print resolution, ease of transportation, and a high level of durability, backlit’s can be a great way to display your temporary or permanent photographs or artwork, leaving a striking impression on your Chicago audience or clientele!
