FIVE WAYS TO PUT SIGNS TO WORK FOR YOUR BUSINESS

LOOK NO FURTHER. Craft a professional, easily visible street-level sign to direct first-time clients to your retail location. DESIGN TO IMPRESS. You want potential customers to know that they need to look no further.

EXPAND YOUR REACH. Use creative signs along high-traffic roadways like freeways and main streets to bring in traffic from other areas.

INTEGRATE. Incorporate online touchpoints into your signage, enabling viewers who are in a hurry to visit you later. Include your website URL, a short code to text for an incentive or a QR code if your sign is easily scannable.

CAPITALIZE ON CROWDS. Create quality, location-specific signage for special occasions like parades, holidays or trade shows to maximize traffic to your location when the crowds are near.

DIFFERENTIATE. Make sure all of your signage reflects your unique brand promise and personality. Research shows that consumers see your signs as a direct reflection of your products, services and quality of care.

SIGN DESIGN & PRODUCTION IN CHICAGO, IL

With the development of the internet and online trade, there are numerous new ways that Chicago businesses can go about advertising their products and getting their brand message across. That being said, effectively designed and printed signage is a sure fire way to attract new and existing customers to your business. From window and vehicle graphics to banners and site signs, if signs are part of your marketing budget, follow these simple steps to make sure that your signage dollars are spent wisely.

A Variety of Options

To be effective, signs have to be highly visible and easy to read. Some example questions I always ask my clients when discussing signs include – Will your sign be displayed inside or outside? For how long will it be there? From how far away do the signs need to be visible? Do they need to be visible at night?

These are just a few examples that you should take into consideration when determining sign size, material to print on, and the size of the graphics and lettering. If your business is located on Michigan Avenue here in Chicago, it makes more sense to use smaller window graphics to attract new clients walking past the storefront every day. On the other hand, if your business is located along the Kennedy Expressway, a large billboard sign would make the most sense to attract business from Chicago drivers on their daily commute.

Make the Message Clear

Whether you need a large billboard sign or simple window graphics, the most important thing to remember when effectively designing your signs is to send a clear message. Whatever that message may be, you can enhance its effectiveness by choosing a typeset and color combination that best reflects the message and the product you are selling. Signs that need to be seen from a distance will need a strong, simple typeset. If distance is not a major factor, there are more options available to you when considering typeset and colors. Even so, I would still recommend simplicity if possible. A good compromise for a lot of businesses that I work with is to use a fancy and intricate design for the company name and brand and then moving to simpler, more readable typeset for the details of the message.

Branding and Identity

Effective use of color is another powerful way to enhance the message you are trying to put across. If your brand has an established and recognized color scheme, using the same colors throughout all signage can reinforce your image, identity, and the message you are trying to promote. Color can also be effective when trying to evoke a certain mood from you target audience. A great example of how businesses can use color to effect mood is restaurants. Stop by Chicago’s Giordano’s on Rush Street, Lou Malnati’s on State Street, or Pizzeria Uno on Ohio Street. You may notice that all the restaurants predominantly use shades of the color red. Many restaurants use shades of red because warm colors are known to enhance appetite.

Once these elements have been decided and confirmed for what suits best for you particular business and industry, consider giving it one more element to really make you stand out from the crowd. For example, you may want to consider highlighting the most important piece of text on your sign in a secondary color. This can be effective in directing people to the most important part of your sign and help them to remember the information for a longer period of time. Alternatively if your brand color theme does not allow for this, a simple border can help people focus on your message and read it more clearly.
