What is offset printing?

It’s a printing technique in which an inked image is transferred from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to a printing surface. Pretty much it’s a way to mass produce very high quality looking printed materials such as: coupons, magazines, flyers, newspapers, etc.

Offset printing at first seems like a very complicated process. Huge machines, big metal plates, rubber blankets and 2,000lb rolls of paper all combine to create a single magazine or flyer. The reason these items need to be huge and durable is because they’re mass-producing marketing materials (ie: catalogs or magazines) in hundreds of thousands (or even millions) of copies.

There is a catch – just because there are a lot of magazines being printed doesn’t mean that the quality can slide or be poor. The first printed magazine has to look as sharp and good as the 250,000th one. Therefore big, complication machinery is required in order to make sure the quality and longevity is perfect.

Those who market themselves or their company via direct mail take full advantage of offset printing as it offers a very attractive ROI. Offset printing is usually reserved for big-run print jobs as there is some cost associated with the setup of the plates/printing materials and to use it for just a few coupons or magazines isn’t really worth it.
