PRINTING ACRYLIC SIGNS IN DOWNTOWN SAN FRANCISCO

Acrylic signs are printed on acrylic sheets, which resemble glass. These sheets are widely known as plexiglass. AlphaGraphics in downtown San Francisco can print acrylic signs on large sheets of plexiglass using a large-format printer.

ACRYLIC VERSUS GLASS

Plexiglass looks almost identical to glass. Acrylic sheets, like glass sheets, can be clear, frosted, or colored. However, unlike glass, acrylic sheets are much more durable.

Acrylic sheets don’t shatter as easily as glass sheets do. A glass sheet would shatter into many pieces if dropped. However, an acrylic sheet would most likely just chip and get scratched.

Although acrylic sheets are much more durable than glass sheets; plexiglass is more susceptible to getting scratched than glass. Thus, a hard coating can be applied to acrylic signs to make them more scratch-resistant. In addition, small scratches on plexiglass can often be buffed out and polished.

Plexiglass weighs half as much as glass. Thus, acrylic signs are easier to mount than glass signs. However, AlphaGraphics can create standoff graphic displays using acrylic, glass, or aluminum signs.

Both acrylic sheets and glass sheets can be formed and molded using heat. However, acrylic sheets are more moldable and flexible in less heat than glass sheets.

The below photo contains four examples of lightweight, easy to mount, acrylic signs.

PROS AND CONS OF ACRYLIC SIGNS

Since acrylic signs are easily moldable in heat, they can bow or bend if left in direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Thus, acrylic signs are not suitable for prolonged outdoor use.

Acrylic signs are ideal for indoor use. They have a more professional look than signs printed on paper, foam board, and corrugated plastic.

Acrylic signs make bold statements when used as backlit graphic displays. In this type of display, relatively low-heat LED lights are positioned behind the acrylic sign. This makes the graphics on the sign more vibrant.
