1. Purpose - The first question you should ask yourself when designing a banner is, "What is the purpose of the banner?" What outcome do you want to achieve? Is your main goal to generate more sales, create more awareness about a cause, or create more foot traffic?
2. Placement - The next question to ask is,"Who is my target audience"? For example, if your target audience is teens then it would be smart to place your banner where this age group will see your banner. You'll want to place your sign where your audience will most likely see it.
3. Color - Try to stick to your business or organization colors for consistent branding. Make sure there is good contrast for readability. For example a light color on a dark color or vice versa can be seen easily from a distance. Adding a few pops of color is okay as well.
4. Graphics - Be sure to use large format graphics that have high resolution. You can often find these images on a stock photography site such as "Shutter Stock.com" Choosing quality graphics that powerfully convey your message clearly will make a memorable impression on your audience.
5. Fonts - With large outdoor signs it's imperative to choose a font that is readable. Stick with Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial for example. Stay away from script fonts, serif fonts that have thin characters, as well as handwritten fonts. These might look nice up close, but far away you are sure to lose your audience.
6. Simplicity - Keeping it simple is so important. Many times I pass beautifully designed billboards that simply have too much info to read in the few seconds I drive by. Only convey one idea on your outdoor banner. Don't be afraid of white space in your design. Only use a maximum of two readable fonts.
7. Call to Action - Your banner should always include a call to action. Invite customers to your store.
Include a limited time offer or sale. Then make sure you put your website or phone number in a different color or place that stands out.
8. Fun - Last but not least.... HAVE FUN! If your having fun it is sure to shine through your design as well. This is the best way to connect with your audience and make an impact. It's your time to stand out on a large scale.Think outside of the box when your coming up with ideas. The sky is the limit!
