PRINTING POLE BANNERS IN DOWNTOWN SAN FRANCISCO

Pole banners are vertical outdoor banners that are often seen hanging off the sides of streetlights. They can also be seen hanging off the sides of buildings. Pole banners hang on horizontal rods that are affixed to streetlight poles or are mounted to building walls. The top and bottom of a pole banner consists of sleeves that the horizontal rods go through.

Since pole banners are for outdoor use, they are typically made of PVC, a vinyl material that is heavy-weight and water-resistant. Also, since pole banners are often double-sided, they are probably vinyl banners that contain a blockout core liner to prevent the front image from showing in the back.

THE PRINT PROCESS OF VINYL POLE BANNERS

AlphaGraphics in downtown San Francisco uses ultraviolet (UV) inks to print on vinyl pole banners. During the printing process, immediately after the inks are applied to the banner, a UV light cures (or dries) the ink, which is then bonded to the fabric. As a result of this bonding, UV inks are abrasion resistant – which means it is highly unlike that the ink will slough or rub off. In addition, UV inks are also water and fade resistant. Thus, pole banners printed with UV inks will not fade from rain/snow/mist and sun exposure.

POLE BANNER USE IN SAN FRANCISCO

In San Francisco, you often see pole banners hanging off streetlights near Moscone Center. When there is a conference at Moscone Center, sponsors of the conference often use pole banners around the convention center to advertise their presence at the conference.

During the month of June, which is LGBT Pride Month in San Francisco, you often see rainbow flag pole banners hanging off streetlights in the Castro District.

Around the time of Chinese New Year, streetlights and buildings throughout San Francisco’s Chinatown will have pole banners welcoming in the New Year.
