A bleed is a printing technique where your design is printed bigger than the final product’s finished size and then cut down to size. Bleeds are ideal if your design has a full-colored background because it eliminates any unwanted white space or borders around the edge of your design.
Bleeds are only necessary on the outside edges of your document. For example, if you are creating a document with spreads (such as a saddle stitch catalog with facing pages), you’ll need to know which sides of your pages will bleed and which ones won’t. In a document with facing pages, the gutter (the center where two pages meet) doesn’t require a bleed because it’s not a trimmed edge of the page and butts up to another page.
