Yard Signs in New Bern FAQ

Yard signs are probably one of the most common signs you’ll find anywhere in the U.S.

Yard signs are used to promote political campaigns, garage sales, and even the services of the guy who promises to teach you how to make a million dollars!  This highly versatile promotional tool is cost-effective, easy to install, and can be used by an unlimited number of industries and organizations. Read on to learn more about all you ever wanted to know about this small but very powerful sign.

How to Install a Yard Sign

Yard SignBelieve it or not, there is a right way and a wrong way to install a yard sign:
  1. First, find a place that will allow the sign to stand up on its own. Some lawns or dirt areas are unsuitable because the soil is too soft or too hard.
  2. Take the provided wire stake and push it deep into the ground. If the soil is firm, you can use a very light mallet to push it in gently. Avoid using too much force as the wire stake can and will bend.
  3. After the stake is inside the ground, take your yard sign and slide it over.
If you’re not using a wire stake, then refer to the installation instructions given to you by your sign shop. Some signs might require the usage of nuts and bolts to adhere them to a metal pole or fence.

New Bern Yard Sign Rules and Regulations

The City of New Bern has listed a few rules you’ll need to consider when displaying an outdoor sign. If you’re in doubt of where you can place the sign, how long you can display it for, or what you are and aren’t allowed to say, give the signage experts at AlphaGraphics of New Bern a call.   Keep in mind that even if the city has no rules for putting a yard sign in a particular area, the property owners might. For example, homeowner’s associations (HOAs) govern many residential neighborhoods and apartment/condo complexes. These organizations might have various bylaws and rules on the placement of a yard sign on their property.  When it comes to the placement of a yard sign, it’s best to ask around to make sure you’re in the clear.

How to Protect a Yard Sign?

As the last election showed us, yard signs are a prime target for vandals, especially political ones. Technically this is illegal but don’t expect Columbo to appear and track down the offenders.  Political messages aren’t the only type of yard sign that can get defaced—jealous business competitors can also vandalize or remove your sign.  Here are a few common-sense ideas on how to protect your yard sign from intentional damage by others:
  • Make sure you place it in an area with ample light at nighttime.
  • If possible, try to place the sign near a CCTV camera
  • You can apply an anti-graffiti laminate or paint that will help prevent people from defacing your sign with a permanent paint marker
At the end of the day, if someone really wants to deface your yard sign, they will find a way. If your yard site doesn’t reside on your personal property, try to check up on it as frequently as possible.

Storage and Cleaning of Yard Signs

When it comes time to take down your yard sign, remove the sign from the metal posts, then gently remove the stakes from the ground. Take a slightly damp cloth and gently wipe off any accumulated dirt or grime. Store your yard sign in a dry area, and it will last you for many years to come. If properly taken care of, your paper or cardboard yard sign can last for a reasonably long time. However, if you require the ultimate in yard sign durability, look no further than Coroplast—which is a lightweight, cost-effective, colorfast, corrugated plastic. Coroplast is waterproof, snow-proof, and corrosion-resistant, and it’s the ideal material to use in your outdoor yard sign. You can also opt for Translucent Coroplast, which will reflect and catch the light, and it also provides a noticeable “glow” when adding a backlight.
